He was a hard working but not outgoing person. He didn't do much but work on the farm and go into town for a couple of beers. After marriage, he left the farm to travel with his new wife.
He hates chickens. He thinks they ruined his childhood. He also thinks that they are horrible creatures that do nothing but die.
We should look at how it affects his writing. It may cause him to be cautious against optimism.
